Bunaken, Siladen & Nain
World-class marine park with over 3,000 species of fish and some of the most spectacular coral reef walls on earth.

The Lokon-Empung volcanic complex near Tomohon is one of Indonesia's most active and accessible volcanoes — and one of the most dramatic experiences in all of North Sulawesi. The complex consists of two main cones: Gunung Lokon and Gunung Empung, with the highly active Tompaluan Crater sitting between them. Our recommended climb is via Mount Mahawu, a nearby sister volcano that offers a spectacular crater view and a more accessible trail. The trek to the summit takes approximately 45-60 minutes and rewards hikers with panoramic views across the Minahasa highlands, the Gulf of Manado, the islands of Bunaken and Manado Tua, and on clear days, even the Philippines in the distance. The sight of an active crater with sulfuric gases, turquoise lake, and the vast landscape stretching to the sea is genuinely breathtaking. This is adventure tourism at its finest.

Start your hike early in the morning for the best weather and clearest views from the summit. Wear sturdy shoes with good grip, as the trail can be muddy. Bring water and a light rain jacket, as mountain weather can change quickly. The Mahawu trail has concrete steps in many sections, making it more accessible than the Lokon trail. If you want to view the Tompaluan Crater between Lokon and Empung, ask your guide — it can be observed from a safe viewpoint along the road without a full hike.
The Lokon-Mahawu volcanic complex is located near Tomohon, approximately 1 hour by car from Manado. A car rental from Manado takes you directly to the trailhead at the base of Mount Mahawu. The Tompaluan Crater between Lokon and Empung is visible from the main road and can be stopped at en route. The scenic drive through the Minahasa highlands — with views of rice terraces, clove plantations, and traditional Minahasa villages — is part of the experience.
The best time for a Lokon volcano hike is during the dry season from March to October, when trails are less muddy and summit views are clearest. Early morning starts (before 7 AM) offer the best chance of cloud-free panoramas. The Tompaluan Crater between Lokon and Empung can be viewed year-round from the roadside viewpoint.
The Mount Mahawu trek is moderate and suitable for most fitness levels. The hike to the summit takes approximately 45-60 minutes on a well-maintained trail with concrete steps in many sections. No technical climbing skills are required.
Yes, on clear days the panoramic views from Mount Mahawu include the Gulf of Manado, Bunaken Island, Manado Tua, and even the distant outline of the Philippines. Early morning offers the best visibility.
Mount Mahawu, the recommended hike in the Lokon complex, is monitored by the volcanology authority. When activity levels are normal, guided hikes to the crater rim are safe and permitted. Your guide will check conditions before departure.
The Tompaluan Crater is the highly active crater sitting between Mount Lokon and Mount Empung. It frequently emits volcanic gases and steam, and occasionally produces minor eruptions. Visitors can safely view the crater from a designated roadside viewpoint without needing to hike. It is one of the most dramatic volcanic sights in North Sulawesi.
Lokon and Empung are twin volcanic peaks with the active Tompaluan Crater between them — these are best viewed from a distance. Mahawu is a nearby sister volcano with a more accessible trail, a colorful sulfuric crater lake at the top, and sweeping 360-degree panoramic views. Most tours combine the Mahawu hike with a Tompaluan Crater viewpoint stop.
